Raton's History
Raton, New Mexico, has a rich history rooted in the days of the Santa Fe Trail, which passed nearby and brought traders and settlers through the region in the 19th century. The town began to grow significantly in the 1870s with the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Raton became a bustling coal mining center, attracting workers from various backgrounds. Incorporated in 1891, the town played a key role in regional transportation and commerce, with its economy and culture shaped by the railroad and mining industries. Today, Raton preserves its historical charm with landmarks like the Raton Pass and the historic downtown district.

The town grew rapidly due to the coal mining boom in the area. Coal mining became a major industry in Raton, leading to increased economic activity and population growth.
1881
The arrival of the railroad in Raton marked the beginning of significant growth. The town became an important stop on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway line.
1880
The town of Raton was officially founded. Its name is from the Spanish word "ratón," meaning "little mouse," reflecting the rodent activity in Raton-Clayton volcanic field.
1866
The Santa Fe Railroad established a route through the area, which eventually influenced the development of the town. The railroad played a significant role in the economic growth of Raton by facilitating trade and transport.

Raton Pass, just south of town, was a key crossing point for wagons heading west on the Santa Fe Trail. It was so important that railroads later blasted through it to connect the Midwest to the Southwest.
