Fall Hikes in Colfax County, New Mexico

Fall is one of the best times to get outside in Colfax County. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and wide-open views make it a perfect season to hit the trail.

Raton

• Sugarite Canyon State Park: Explore forested trails, historic coal camp ruins, and views around Lake Maloya.

• Little Horse Mesa Trail: A great option for hikers wanting a little elevation and wide-open views at the top.

Cimarron

• Clear Creek Trail: Located in Cimarron Canyon State Park, this trail follows the creek and is known for its waterfalls and canyon scenery.

• Maverick Canyon Trails: A network of old logging roads and trails with wildlife viewing, forest views, and plenty of room to explore. Check current permit and access requirements before you go.

Angel Fire

• Greenbelt Trails: A connected trail system throughout Angel Fire with easy-to-moderate options for a quick walk, family outing, or afternoon hike.

• Elliot Barker Trail: An intermediate hike with views of the Moreno Valley, Baldy Mountain, Eagle Nest Lake, and the Wheeler Wilderness.

Valle Vidal

• Middle Ponil Loop: A longer backcountry hike through open meadows, forests, and creekside areas. Valle Vidal is known for its incredible wildlife, big views, and quiet mountain scenery.
